Travel to and from Pittsburgh

The easiest airport to get to Pittsburgh, PA is the Pittsburgh International Airport, which offers direct flights to/from airports in North America and London. It’s possible to fly into other cities which have more international routes, such as New York, Philadelphia, or Washington, D.C. If you do this, or if you are close to Pittsburgh, you can then connect via train (Amtrak), inter-city bus (Megabus, Greyhound), or driving.

Travel via Plane

Getting to the conference venue from the Pittsburgh Airport

Once you arrive at Pittsburgh International Airport, the conference venue, Omni William Penn Hotel, is only 18 miles away. A research project called NavCog can be downloaded from the Apple app store for iOS devices. It provides directions and navigation in the airport, especially for people with vision impairments or who use wheelchairs.

Travel between Pittsburgh Airport and the conference venue

By Bus

The Port Authority of Allegheny County runs a bus service (Route 28X Airport Flyer) from the Airport through downtown Pittsburgh and up to Oakland. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the conference venue and costs $2.75 if paid in cash ($2.50 if a reusable ConnectCard is purchased). The buses do have dedicated space for wheelchair users, and more information about the accessibility of the buses can be found on the Port Authority web page.

By Car

The Omni Hotel can be reached by car from the airport in anywhere from 25-60 minute depending on traffic. It’s only 18 miles along the I-376, but weekdays rush hours can be very slow. You can rent cars at the Pittsburgh airport, or take one of the taxis (called zTrip) waiting outside Door 6. You can also use the Uber or Lyft apps to call a car, If you call one of these services, you will meet your driver outside Door 4 near the purple curb.

Pay attention when you enter the Fort Pitt tunnel, as the view of the city as you exit is one of the best!

Travel via Train

Rail service in the U.S. is typically not as frequent or as fast as Europe, but there are two train routes that serve Pittsburgh via Amtrak. These are Capitol Limited, which connects Pittsburgh with Chicago and Washington D.C., and the Pennsylvanian, which goes to New York, passing through Philadelphia. If you choose to fly into another city, you should also consider taking inter-city buses, as they are often faster and cheaper than Amtrak. Amtrak fares often get higher closer to the date of travel, so book in advance!

Travel by Bus

There are two major bus operators that connect Pittsburgh with other cities: Greyhound and Megabus. Megabus tends to have nicer coaches, often with better WiFi service.

Getting to the conference venue from the Bus Stations

The Greyhound buses arrive at the across the street from the Amtrak station, so follow the instructions detailed above.
